ADT's challenge

ADT provides electronic security services to more than six million households and businesses across North America. Both at home and at work, more Americans depend on the protection of ADT than on any other monitoring and security system.

Each day, ADT's 7,000-plus technicians must respond to thousands of customer calls. Keeping this mobile workforce rolling requires a fleet of functional and reliable vehicles.

Historically, ADT's fleet consisted of full-size service vans. As fuel prices rose, though, these vans proved increasingly more costly to operate. The company was looking for a way to reduce the costs and emissions of its fleet while providing its technicians with a vehicle that would enable them to effectively serve customers.

GE Capital's strategy

With an 8-year relationship helping ADT finance and manage their fleet, GE Capital gathered a team of strategic consultants and fleet management experts to help ADT find new savings.

GE Capital used modeling tools to determine the most cost-effective and fuel-efficient vehicles to replace ADT's old service vans. GE Capital identified a new vehicle type as the best option and then helped ADT deploy the vehicles across its operations.

In parallel, GE Capital also helped ADT conduct a study of its information and communications technologies. As a result of the study, ADT installed GE's high-tech GPS and telematics solution in about 7,000 of its vehicles. The telematics solution helps ADT technicians increase productivity while reducing vehicle mileage, cutting fuel costs and accidents as well as monitoring unauthorized vehicle use.

The results

The deployment of the new, more efficient vehicles will help ADT save more than $6 million a year in operating costs. It has also reduced CO2 emissions by 40%. Based on the results of the trial study, GE's telematics solution will create a further estimated savings of more than $3 million annually.
